Season: 1998-99

Manager: Stan Ternent, Pos: 15th in Division 2

Like the season before it, this season was almost dead for Burnley before it started. Stan Ternent had filled the vacancy left by Chris Waddle. With characteristic hypocrisy the board had complained about Adrian Heath's poaching by Everton, then promptly lured Ternent (brought through the Burnley reserve team as a youth) from Bury. Under Ternent Bury had enjoyed successive promotion seasons and survival in Division One, and gave a demonstration of their superior in a first round Coca-Cola Cup game.

Meanwhile, Burnley faced relegation for the second season in a row. The team were more stubborn, but not markedly better, than the previous year, and after one particularly appalling home defeat against York City, Ternent publicly banned 4 players - Howey, Blatherwick, Winstanley and Williams - from ever wearing a Burnley shirt again.

By October the team were 20th out of 24 and hovered just above that position for nearly the whole of the rest of the season. Every time Burnley looked capable of pulling clear of relegation new disasters struck. In March, a home defeats of 5-0 by Gillingham (with Bob Taylor scoring all five) and 6-0 against Manchester City put the manager's position in peril.

However, most of the major changes at the club had happened at the boardroom level. After acrimonous public battles, Frank Teasdale had finally handed over his controlling interest to an unlikely alliance of local businessman Barry Kilby (favoured by Teasdale) and flamboyant US-based PR millionare Ray Ingleby. Largely against public opinion, Kilby let Ternent keep his job, and backed him with the money to buy the fans' hero Steve Davis from Luton for ú750,000, Mickey Mellon and Lenny Johnrose.

In retrospect it was a wise move, because Burnley's form improved dramatically and ended the season with an 11-match unbeaten run, almost finishing in the top half of the table. Burnley were safe to fight another season in Division Two.
