Mark Kennedy scored twice as the Clarets were thumped 5-0 by
Manchester City tonight in the Worthington Cup at Maine Road.
The other Blues goals came from Shaun Goater, Kevin Horlock -
from the penalty spot - and substitute Gareth Taylor as City made
the second leg at Turf Moor in a fortnight a virtual formality
at a ground where City hit six last term.
With Lee Crooks and Danny Tiatto coming in for the injured (and
ineligible) Danny Granville and Richard Edghill, City started
well against a Burnley side who gave starts to Tom Cowan, Lenny
Johnrose and Andy Payton.
Dickov and Kennedy went close early on, but Payton should have
put the visitors ahead on six minutes when he put Johnrose's
cross over the bar.
Mellon's drive five minutes later was deflected over for the
Clarets before Goater, Morrison and Kennedy all went close for
City.
Payton then headed over for Burnley before City took the lead.
Tiatto fed Horlock who in turn squared to Goater who scored
City's opening goal of the season from two yards out.
Even then Burnley could have been level at the break when Crooks'
woeful backpass found Mellon, who was thwarted by Weaver's feet.
If the first half was fairly close, the second half was anything
but as City ran riot.
Mark Kennedy scored his first goal for the club three minutes
after the restart when a corner was cleared straight to him and
he cut in before unleashing a beauty beyond Crichton and in off
the far post.
Just after the hour mark Mitchell Thomas brought down Paul Dickov
and Kevin Horlock beat Crichton from the penalty spot to make it
three.
Substitute Gareth Taylor got in on the act on 74 minutes with a
simple header from Horlock's cross, before Kennedy rounded off
proceedings with his second and City's fifth of the evening with
a crisp drive eight minutes from time via a slight deflection.
In front of a Maine Road crowd of 11,074, City showed that the
cutting edge is there when needed, albeit against second division
opposition.
As for Burnley, they'll be thankful that City didn't reach the
six they scored last March at Turf Moor as Stan Ternent's cunning
plan backfired badly.
