Reports
An Andy Payton first-half strike secured a 1-0 win at Oldham but
a number of squandered chances will be a concern to boss Stan
Ternant.
Ternent will no doubt be pleased with the three points picked up
away at Oldham, but will be aware that his side never pulled away
in terms of goals from a team who did not match them in open
play.
Andy Payton was both hero and culprit in this game, but the
effort that will be remembered most about the affair will
undoubtedly be his wonderful goal that sealed the affair.
After squandering an earlier 1-1 chance, that he hit straight at
the keeper, Payton got things right.
Paul Smith played an intelligent through ball that put Payton in
with a good chance of opening the scoring and the striker was
very much up to the challenge.
Payton spotted Kelly racing off his line and eventually lobbed
the ball over the oncoming custodian to produce a goal good
enough to grace any game.
Good chances aside the Clarets did not let the Latics get into
their stride and nobody embodied the desire in Burnley's ranks
more than Micky Mellon, who was influential in midfield, his
incisive passing proved a constant thorn in the flesh of the home
side.
The Clarets dominated in the second half of the game as they had
the first but Payton yet again squandered a great chance to put
the game beyond the home team shooting wide when put clear in the
box.
The home side had few decent efforts and when they did Clarets
keeper Paul Crichton, largely a spectator, was up to the
challenge.
Chrichton saved well from McNiven twice to help land the spoils.Errors? Comments? Opinions to add to this page? Mail us!
