Reports
It was Andy Payton who was the hero again for Burnley, just as he
did at Oldham last week he scored the only goal to beat Stoke
1-0 at Turf Moor.
In a pretty tight game, it was the former Hull and Barnsley man
who grabbed the winning goal fifteen minutes from time.
It was a forgetable first half, with only a couple of chances for
both sides.
Dean West was involved in both good moment for Burnley, the first
saw him send a diving header just wide after a good cross from
the byline by Payton.
Alan Lee's diagonal ball then set up the former Bury man again,
this time his header was saved by Gavin Ward down to his right.
Stoke's first real effort of note came from Anders Jacobson, when
his header from Graham Kavanagh's corner was tipped over by Paul
Crichton.
Then Eire international Kavanagh saw a 25 yard strike whistle
past the Stoke upright.
Half time 0-0.
It was the home team who created more and look the most likely to
score in the second period.
Paul Cook's corner was headed towards goal by Mitchell Thomas,
but Ward was on hand again to tip over, and then Micky Mellon saw
a good strike go just wide.
The deciding goal came on 75 minutes, and Payton showed his
goalscoring instinct again.
Substitute Graham Branch flicked the ball on, and Payton held off
the defender before shooting across Ward and into the net.
