Reports
Preston denied Burnley the chance to go top of the Second
Division in an ill-tempered goalless Lancashire derby at Deepdale
that saw only one shot on target in the whole match.
The home side enjoyed the best of the opening half but Steve
Basham squandered two good chances and the main talking point
came when home skipper Michael Jackson was lucky to escape with
just a booking in the 33rd minute after swinging a punch at
Burnley's Paul Cook in a ten man scuffle.
The Clarets came back stronger in the second half and almost went
ahead in the 56th minute when the tireless Andy Payton
pressurised Preston keeper Teuvo Moilanen into miscuing a
clearance, only for Michael Branch to blaze over the follow-up.
Preston hit back and were furious after having two legitimate
penalty appeals turned down soon after when both Basham and Kurt
Nogan were upended.
Branch almost redeemed himself for his earlier error when forcing
a fine save from Moilanen in the 83rd minute.Errors? Comments? Opinions to add to this page? Mail us!
