Reports
A superb
hat-trick from Andy Payton gave the Clarets a comfortable 3-0 win
over Colchester and sent them top of the Second Division.
Payton got his name on the scoresheet after just nine minutes
when he headed home Glenn Little's inch perfect cross from the
right.
The striker then had to wait until six minutes before the
interval for his second of the game. Graham Branch was sent
tumbling in the penalty area by David Green and up stepped Payton
from the penalty spot to grab his second drilling the ball
straight down the middle of the goal.
His hat-trick was complete early in the second half when he
superbly controlled a cross from Paul Smith before tucking his
shot beyond the keeper.
Colchester rarely threatened the Clarets goal and the majority of
the 10,000 plus crowd saw Stan Ternent's side run out easy
winners.
And Payton could almost have claimed a fourth late on after Steve
Davis' shot hit the bar. Payton followed up but his effort was
judged not to have crossed the line.
And then the man who had been a thorn in Colchester's side all
afternoon shot wide of the upright in the closing stages.
The result leaves Burnley top with 17 points, a point ahead of
Bristol Rovers. Errors? Comments? Opinions to add to this page? Mail us!
