Reports
Burnley threw away the chance of all 3 points and the kudos of
ending Brentford's 24-game unbeaten run. Two up at half time from
goals by Payton and Cook, Burnley then dithered and
uncharacteristically conceded sloppy goals to allow the Bees back
in to the match.
After early chances for both sides, the Clarets went ahead after
23 minutes. Trickery on the wing from Little left two defenders
standing and then an inch-perfect cross allowed Payton to head
the ball home although surrounded by taller Brentford players.
Then another Little delivery was headed away, only for lightning
reactions from Cook to put the ball in the net. Towards the end
of the half Branch hit the bar.
In in the second half, an error from Armstrong led to a backpass
to Crichton ended up at the feet of Scott Partridge who coolly
put the ball over the goalkeeper. With their tails up, Brentford
pushed for an equaliser and duly got it with ten minutes to go.
Referee Frankland dispossessed John Mullin and the ball fell to
Paul Evans, who capped his 62-yard goal against Preston last week
with a 45-yard effort past Crichton this week.
"It feels like a defeat," admitted Steve Davis afterwards, but
Burnley have only dropped to 3rd in the table, behind Bristol
Rovers and Wigan. They will be looking forward to next Sunday's
televised game against Scunthorpe to get back to winning ways.
